Selman Selmanagić is the only architect and designer from Bosnia and Herzegovina who had a direct contact with the European artistic avant-garde through his education on the most important school of European artistic avant-garde, Bauhaus, where he graduated in 1932. His most important contribution on the preservation of the Bauhaus tradition after the Second World War was marked by his pedagogical work and projects in which he, in an ideologically rigid framework of the erstwhile German Democratic Republic, attempted to keep the basic principles of this school through an emphasized orientation toward the social, political and cultural needs of users and through defining and understanding architecture and design much more broadly than the (mere) issues of form and function.
